The question “what is Stockport famous for?” is one that will be answered differently by different people, but here are some of the things that we love about this town.
You’ll find that many people instantly associate Stockport with the work of the artist of L.S. Lowry. Without even having seen Stockport in real life, people all over the world instantly recognise some of the areas and districts of the town and it is fair to say that the work of Lowry has helped to make many people aware of what Stockport has to offer.
The Stockport Viaduct plays a very important in linking Manchester with Birmingham and London but for many people, the look and style of the viaduct is more than enough of a reason to enjoy this area. This is an instantly recognisable viaduct that has helped to put Stockport on the map.
Plenty of famous people hail from Stockport
There are famous people from Stockport, and here are some that we should all be very proud of:
- Blossoms – One of the most interesting and exciting guitar bands of the present day hail from Stockport
- Craig Cash – Best known as Dave from The Royle Family but one of the writers of the show and Early Doors
- Yvette Fielding – Yvette has enjoyed a long-running career as a TV presenter but for many of us, she will always be a fresh faced Blue Peter presenter
- Sarah Harding – A singer and actress, Sarah will always be remembered as the bold, confident and brassy member of Girls Aloud
- Ricky Hatton – A light heavyweight champion of the world, and it doesn’t get much bigger than that
- Mike Yarwood – An impressionist of a thousand voices, Yarwood was one of the biggest TV names in the 1970s, an era when that actually meant something
- Paul Morley – a music journalist who has made a career out of talking about Joy Division
Music is clearly an important aspect of life in Greater Manchester and a big claim to fame for Stockport is the fact that Strawberry Studios was located here. The studio was owned by 10cc, which is important enough, but the studio has been used by acts like Joy Division, Paul McCartney, The Smiths and The Stone Roses. This is a roll-call that music fans all over the world love.
