The Greater Manchester Combined Authority, the GMCA, have provided a thumb-up for the Stockport bus station proposals. Given that these are multi-million proposals which are likely to transform the town centre of Stockport, it is natural that local households and businesses have an interest in this transport interchange.
The proposals also include a two-acre public park and there will be a residential development which is set to be added to the land where the current Stockport bus station is found. This is an issue that interests Spencer Harvey and you can rest assured that we will help you stay in touch with any local property market developments.
Change is good for Stockport
The transformation of Stockport town centre should have a positive impact on the local area. Improved transport options and a more welcoming town centre are positive factors for any property market. The main Stockport housing focus will fall on the new development, but existing homeowners should find that they are able to benefit from the improvements too.
The proposals for the transport interchange include:
- A covered passenger concourse
- Improved routes to the town centre and rail station for cyclists and pedestrians
- A new Travelshop to make it easier to buy tickets and find information
- 20 bus stands
- A park in the town centre
- Public space in the town centre
- Cycle Parking
- 200 apartments being introduced in a residential development
It is this development, alongside 200 car parking spaces, that will likely be of interest to people looking for increased transport options in Stockport.
A spokesperson for Transport for Greater Manchester, TfGM, released a statement to various online media sources, stating; “It is estimated that the cost of the Stockport Interchange, public park and residential development will be in the region of £85m to £90m, although this will be subject to review following our public engagement exercise and prior to submitting a planning application to the council. It is part of an investment of around £120 million in wider improvements to the public realm in Stockport town centre.”
Stockport is cited as a good example
While planning application will be submitted to Stockport Council later in 2018, the plans are currently out for public consultation and there appears to be positivity surrounding the plans. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has cited the work in Stockport as a “fantastic example of integrated town centre planning, with TfGM and Stockport Council working together to build something that will benefit an entire community”.
