STOCKPORT TRANSFORMATION CONTINUES APACE

Stockport Transformation Continues Apace

People need to be able to get around a modern town and the “Town Centre Access Plan” is an integral part of the development of Stockport. Work got underway back in 2015 but the project isn’t likely to be finished until 2020. This may leave some people wondering what the fuss is all about and whether the project should be completed faster but over £70m is being spent on improving this aspect of Stockport life.

There is also significant work lined up for Stockport Bus Station, something which many people believe is long overdue. The station is more than 30 years old, but it is in line for a £40m transformation, with a canopy being brought in to save you from getting soaked when waiting for a bus.

Stockport Exchange is an ongoing project

You will have seen considerable work taking place at Stockport Exchange but the great news for residents is that so far, only two of the eight phases have been completed. This means that there will be more upheaval to come but equally, there will be many more developments and improvements to follow. This area is set to receive £145m worth of improvements and hopefully there will be an announcement on the planning application for the third stage of work in this area.

Redrock is anther development that has changed in front of our eyes and this is very close to being complete. This development has seen £45m being spent on the leisure complex and people are already flocking to it.

There is a need for residential developments in Stockport and the Covent Garden Urban Village is likely to make a difference in the local property market. While work got underway back in 2012, it will continue until 2019, bringing around 250 new homes to Stockport. This is a project that costs £33m and it has been undertaken by the local council, Seddons, a developer, and the Homes and Community Agency.

Shopping supports the local community

The Merseyway Shopping Centre was given a new lease of life by the local council in 2016 and there is more vibrancy in this part of the town than there was before. There is also no doubt that Stockport Old Town has a lot to offer, providing a perfect balance to the modern style of the Merseyway, which is found closeby. Close to £10m is being spent on this part of the town, with the council offering most of it while the Heritage Lottery Fund has offered close to £2m. Market Place, Hillgate and the Underbank are all on line to benefit and hopefully this will assist local traders.
