STOCKPORT SITES EARMARKED FOR RESIDENTIAL USE

Stockport Sites Earmarked For Residential Use

The changing face of Stockport has caught many people by surprise in recent times, but the local council has more plans in store. This is because Stockport Council has showcased a range of sites within the town centre that hold the potential for residential use. If these plans come to fruition, there could be up to 3,000 new homes coming to the town centre area of Stockport.

There is a new strategy for residential property in Stockport with an increased focus on developing brownfield sites. Given the controversy over plans for greenbelt sites in and around Stockport, it is no surprise to learn that the council is looking to move forward in his direction. These new plans have the potential to transform the area between the River Mersey all the way through to the railway station, via King Street West.

New homes are usually always welcome in Stockport

The site with the most potential is located around the railway station and it is believed that close to 800 homes could be located here. There is also the Stagecoach depot and offices which are located on King Street West and this area could provide another 700 homes. There is an appetite to relocate the depot and the council is committed to working alongside Stagecoach to find relocation options.

While the major sites will grab attention, there are also smaller sites that could make a difference. One option is on the land where the Kwik-Fit is found, located opposite of The Crown pub, and this site could welcome 35 units or even a mixed-use scheme. This is an area that the council is continuing to monitor with a view to developing.

Riverside apartments would be very popular in Stockport

Another option which may be explored, said to be at the “concept stage” is a riverside development along Chestergate. This site currently hosts an industrial unit, but it could play host to 100 properties and it is an area that the council would be keen to develop for residential purposes.

There are of course sites that are closer to development than others. An example of this would be the Weir Mill. Given that more than £5m has already been provided to support this development, which will hopefully deliver 300 homes, it is clear that work is far down the line. The council has expressed an intention of seeing progress on this project within the next two years.

Significant funding has also been provided for work at the transport interchange. The current bus station will be replaced but given that 200 new properties will be introduced, there is optimism surrounding this development.

As local estate agents in Stockport, we are delighted to see so much planning and work being lined up for the town. Hopefully, these plans will come to fruition and we’ll see further development in Stockport.
