STOCKPORT SHOPS UNDER THREAT

Stockport Shops Under Threat

While news of the multi-million development by Stockport council should be seen as a positive thing, there are concerns for some local businesses. This can be seen in the fact that one of the oldest stores in Stockport is closing down and the blame is being placed on the local council.

Titterton’s Butchers had been part of Princes Street, in the town centre of Stockport, since 1930 but the businesses recently closed it doors for good on Saturday 27th of August. It would be correct to say that dwindling trade had an impact on the decision to close the store; the impact of the major Redrock Leisure Development has played a part. The fact that the Redrock Development is for a sum of over £45m indicates that there is a lot of good coming to the local area but equally, it may be that many traditional stores or outlets will be negatively impacted on by the work.

Some of the issues which haven’t helped the butchers store have been the loss of nearby car parking facilities and there has been a lot of mess on Princes Street. This has left many shoppers looking for alternative places to shop. The most experienced butcher of the business has likened Princes Street to a building site and this will definitely impact on where shoppers go. Yes, the development will have a big impact in years to come, and this should always be considered but equally, there are businesses that struggle in the short term.

Traditional Stockport shops are dying out

It is not completely the end for the company, which has been operating since 1875 because they have four other stores. These stores in Wythenshawe, Poynton, Woodley and Reddish will all remain open. At its peak, the company held 13 shops and also had a factory but those days are long gone.

There is no doubt that independent organisations can struggle at times to remain relevant and keep their head above water but many firms are struggling at the moment. Stockport residents are also coming to terms with the fact that a local Farmfoods appears to be closing down.

There has been a war of words between Farmfoods and Primark, who own the building and are responsible for setting the rates. Farmfoods accused Primark of high rental prices but this has been denied by the fashion retailer and many people now believe that Farmfoods are trying to engineer an exit from the local area.

Local residents need shops and this means shops closing down is bad news for the property market. If you need guidance on the Stockport property market of want to stay informed of changes to the local area, get in touch and we’ll ensure you are fully informed.
