STOCKPORT PUB AT RISK DUE TO NEW COUNCIL PLANS

Stockport Pub At Risk Due To New Council Plans

While developments and road improvements can carry a level of short-term stress and hassle for people in the affected community, these changes are usually welcomed because they often bring long term benefits. A new road can make life easier; cutting down commute times, opening up new opportunities and of course improving local property values. This is something that most property owners are pleased to see, and knowing that the value of your home is going to rise when you haven’t spent a penny on improvements is a brilliant feeling.

There have been a couple of developments and improvements cited in Stockport recently, and this has helped many people to feel more optimistic about the property market. Greater Manchester has experienced an uplift in recent times, boosted by the close proximity to Manchester Airport, and Manchester benefitting from a range of investment but the local changes have made the market more vibrant.

You’ll often find that some changes aren’t universally liked though. The owner of The Midland pub is taking on Stockport Council after recent plans were unveiled. The pub is located on Wellington Road North, which is close to the town centre and is being threatened with demolition. This is to add a cycle path next to the A6, the plans to do so will see the pub being removed to widen a 200 metre stretch of the road.

A historic pub could be lost in Stockport

The landlord and pub owner Mark Hayter is understandably annoyed at these plans and he is behind a petition to save the pub and force the council to change their plans. Over 500 people have already signed up to voice their support for the pub, but given that the council are applying to the council for permission, Hayter doesn’t hold out much hope of there being official opposition to the plans.

The pub first opened 183 years ago and many of the original features are still in place at the bar. This includes some of the original wall and floor tiles as well as original Yorkshire stone which is located in the cellar. The pub remains a vibrant part of modern Stockport life and the bar itself is a major component of the “Stockport Slope” pub crawl which runs along the A6. Other pubs included in the crawl include The Magnet, The Railway and The Hope Inn.

The pub crawl has been cited by many of the protestors as something that brings people to the area. Pub crawls can bring money into the local economy, there are a number of online sites and social media pages dedicated to this pub crawl and similar pub crawls in the wider region.
