While houses and property are a big part in the way a community feels, the most important part of any community is the people. The behaviour, engagement and interaction of the people within a community will lead the mood of an area and can cause people to feel at home or feel out of place. While it is important to appreciate different needs, outlooks and requirements in life, there is also a lot to be said for bringing people together. This can be difficult but it seems as though steps are being taken to provide Stockport and Greater Manchester with a helping hand in developing a stronger community.
This is because Tony Lloyd, who is currently the interim mayor and the Police and Crime Commissioner, is calling on people in local communities to apply for a share of a £200,000 fund. This funding is being offered to create safer neighbourhoods. This is going to be the second wave of funding of this nature and there will be cash grants of up to £5,000 on offer for projects. The main focus is on reducing the levels of crime and anti-social behaviour across the region.
Stockport groups can benefit from this funding
The Community Chest project was launched earlier in 2016 and that led to a total of 125 projects being set up across the Greater Manchester area and a total of £90,000 was shared out. Some of this money was used in Stockport with volunteers obtaining funding which was used to take on anti-social behaviour. This is the sort of projects that can make a massive difference to the local community, making people feel more at home and reducing the likelihood of trouble or issues arising.
Local community groups across the Greater Manchester region have benefitted with projects like a pub watch scheme, an advice and guidance service at a Magistrates Court and a service which informs the elderly of scams have all benefitted. These are projects which local councils may not have the budget to assist with normally but there is a need to carry out this sort of work. Knowing that help is available is definitely a positive thing and it can boost the mood and feel of a local community.
At Spencer Harvey, we are big supporters of the local community both in Stockport and in surrounding areas. We would recommend local groups who are trying to make a difference to consider this opportunity and determine if there is any way that they can benefit from the deal. While it isn’t going to be a sum of money that will transform the area, it may make a difference in the life of many people, which has to be seen as a positive thing.
Stockport is doing well at the moment but there is always room for improvement and this funding may make a big difference.
