STOCKPORT MILL PROPERTY PLANS APPROVED

Stockport Mill Property Plans Approved

With there being a high level of demand for property in Stockport, and a great deal of discussion on where the best place to put new property in the area, news that a dilapidated mill has been cleared for new flats should be of great interest to people with an interest in the Stockport property market. The development is set to completely transform the Meadow Mill and in addition to having more than 200 flats added to the local area, there will be leisure and retail space, with plans for a restaurant to be added too. It can only be hoped that all of these aspects come together at the same time, offering the new residents the chance to enjoy everything they need on their own doorstep.

The mill has been neglected for a number of years and it can be found next to the Tesco superstore. While this is a stand-alone project, the developers hope to benefit from the overall development work being undertaken in the heart of Stockport. If you have spent any time in the local area, you cannot have missed the work being undertaken with a £1bn regeneration taking place in the town.

Commercial support is needed to make this development a success

While there is a strong level of demand for property, and there has to be more affordable housing options delivered in Stockport, the developers admitted that there was a need to include commercial outlets to ensure the project would make financial sense. This means that companies will have to come on board but with more than 200 households likely to be on site, there is no doubt that the right retailers will be able to make a success of the project. The sooner there is a clear and concise forward movement on this project, the better for everyone and the more likely it will be that the project will come together.

There is no doubt that there has been a great level of interest in this development. Peter Rowlinson is a mill restoration specialist and in his opinion, he believes the mill is one of the finest mills you can hope to find the north west of England. Given the importance of mills in the history of Greater Manchester, it is easy to see why there is a need to retain these mills but Mr Rowlinson’s opinion should be tempered with the fact that he was speaking on behalf of William George Homes. This means that there may be more of a commercially driven focus to his opinion than you would hope for but there is no getting away from the fact that this is a massive space that looks fantastic. Yes, the mill has seen better days but there is a good opportunity to salvage the building and make it look as fantastic as possible for future generations.
