STOCKPORT LIFE: HIGH FIVE REPRIEVE IS GOOD NEWS

Stockport Life: High Five Reprieve Is Good News

At Spencer Harvey, we are pleased with life in Stockport and we think that there is plenty to put a smile on your face in the local area. That said, it would be wrong to think that everything was perfect, and there is always a good reason to cheer people up. This is why one local news story has left us a bit confused of late, but thankfully, there has been a happy ending.

Colin Spencer is a lollipop man at St George's Primary School in Heaviley, Stockport and given that he is 83 years old, and has been working as a lollipop man for 14 years, he has certainly helped a lot of youngsters over the years. Colin was well known for greeting the kids with a high five, but he was informed by the local council that this was not a satisfactory way for Colin to greet the youngsters. This ban has since been lifted though, and the council is not indicating they intend to promote the “unique personalities” of the lollipop team at schools.

A high five can say a lot to a kid

While the education that children receive at school is the most important thing, the engagement and interaction that youngsters receive in and around school is essential. The most important part of the day for some kids could be having the chance to enjoy a hot meal at lunchtime or being treated with a bit of respect, because not every child receives that at home. Even for the youngsters that have a good home life, you can never have too much fun or enjoyment. A simple high five gesture may not seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things but a high five is an endorsement, a simple gesture to say you’re doing alright and that’s exactly what we want to encourage with kids these days.

You can’t really blame local councils for looking into these matters and yes, safety must come first at all times. There is however a need to find a balance, and to make sure that common sense is being applied. In this regard, the fact that the council are happy for Colin and the kids to high five is good news, and it has no doubt helped to add to Colin’s local fame. He’ll probably find that he is high-fiving a lot more kids this week, hopefully that won’t lead to a repetitive strain injury!
