Stockport Bikers Bring Christmas To Local Youngsters

Christmas is a time for traditions and there are many things we do purely because this is what has always been done. This can be seen in how we decorate our homes, the food we eat and even the ways we interact and engage with our friends and family members. For many people, a lot of the fun about Christmas is that you know what is coming and it feels comfortable.

Of course, there are also many new traditions surrounding Christmas. All traditions have to start someplace and in recent times, there have been many events, gatherings and activities that have now become a common part of the festive period. Stockport can say this like any other major town or city and in the past week, there was a big gathering and for once, the sound of revving motorbikes was met with joy and applause, as opposed to the usual tut-tutting or shaking of heads.

This is because it was the latest meeting of the Roughleys Toy Run and there were over 400 motorbikes involved in the process. The run ran from the Tesco in Portwood before reaching the Together Trust which is based in Cheadle. The point of the activity is to ensure presents are handed out the youngsters at the Trust, while there were also gifts and surprises for youngsters from the Rainbow Trust. This is a charity that offers support for the families of youngsters who are suffering from serious and life-threatening illnesses. There were over 200 gifts provided to these children, hopefully brightening up this time of year for some youngsters.

The bikers do a lot of great work in organising the event

While local businesses are involved with the process, donating gifts and providing support, a lot of the work is undertaken by the bikers themselves. Some people love the motorcycle community but it would be fair to say that some people are not so positively disposed to bikers. There can be preconceptions about motorbike gangs and people who lead this lifestyle but this sort of event will hopefully change people’s minds. There is no doubt that many motorbikers play a big role in supporting the local community and there will be many youngsters and families across Stockport who are delighted about the effort that has been put in.

The toy run has been taking place for 16 years and the same group also organise an event at Easter where chocolate eggs are shared. This is the sort of community spirit that people enjoy and at Spencer Harvey, we hope this is a Christmas tradition that continues in Stockport for many years to come. It is certainly one that brings a lot of joy to many people.
