At this point in time, it looks as though plans to build property on a greenbelt site in Stockport has been given the go ahead. There has been a lot of debate and protests about the plans put forward by developers and the Seashell Trust but in the recent development, planning officers have provided approval for the work.
The charity is based in Cheadle and they offer education and care for young people, with specialist help for disabled children, and they need to move to new premises to continue providing the sort of service that they have offered over the years. The plan is to develop a £45m National Centre of Excellence and this will take the place of its current campus which is deemed outdated.
This is obviously a large sum of money and the plans for funding the work came with a plan to sell land they own between the A34 at Heald Green and Wilmslow Road. To do so, planning permission was applied for, with the intention of delivering up to 325 new homes for the local property market. Given that there is a need for more homes in and around Stockport, you would think that this would have been a popular move but this wasn’t quite the case.
There was strong opposition to these plans
In fact, there was quite strong opposition from the local community to this plan. While the groups protesting the property plans have been at pains to point out that they back the work carried out by the charity, they have raised concerns about the scale of the work being undertaken and on the impact that may be had on the surrounding area. Any mention of the term “green belt” is going to get a reaction and people don’t want to see any form of work undertaken on this type of land. There is clearly a need for Stockport to gain new homes but not at any cost it seems.
However, with planning permission granted, it does look as though we are moving towards a conclusion to this saga but there may well be more steps to come. A meeting is planned where the general public can discuss this latest outcome in the tale. However, this will have been seen as a big step forward and it may be that progress can now be made with respect to this property plan and with building new homes for the community.
