OLD PUB LEADS TO NEW HOMES IN STOCKPORT

Old Pub Leads To New Homes In Stockport

The need for new property in and around Stockport, and the Greater Manchester area, has caused some debate as to where homes should be constructed. The strongest level of debate and discussion has fallen on the use of greenbelt sites, but there are other areas utilised for new property that have people wondering if it is the best move or decision. It is only natural that people will hold a lot of affection for the site of one of the oldest pubs in Greater Manchester but given the demand for flats and property, there is a lot to be said for moving with the times.

The pub in question is The White Lion, located on the Great Underbank. The fact that the pub received a licence in the 14th century ensures that it has a lot of supporters and followers, but it is all set for a new lease of life. This is because more than £2m is being ploughed into development work as the local council and Laurus Homes team up to transform the local area. There will be 11 homes brought into the area but there will also be a ground-floor restaurant at the venue, so it is not just prospective property buyers who have an interest in this development.

Work will take around a year

It is believed that work on the project, which has started, will take around a year and that 11 duplex apartments will be introduced to the area. There is a lot to be said for adding new life to a historic building in town. There are many new developments being added to Stockport, so it is vital that historical aspects can be retained while being updated to fit in with modern demands.

Paul Westhead, representing Laurus Homes, released a statement which has been picked up by local press, stating; “Creating new homes, like the new apartments in the White Lion, as well as improved public spaces for everyone to enjoy, is vital in making sure we fulfil our vision of Stockport becoming the town centre residential location of choice in south Manchester.”

The pub has a great deal of history in the local area

One of the reasons the pub was a big favourite for many people was the fact that it was located near to the only crossing point for the Mersey river. The pub was known for being able to host over 20 horses at its stable and it was a hub for local life. The mail coach from London would stop here and in the times of a town crier sharing local news, this venue would welcome residents who were keen to remain fully informed.
