At this time of year, it is natural that many people will be looking to spend time in a pub or perhaps even spend some time with loved ones reminiscing about time spent in old bars and pubs across Stockport. Different people will have their own opinion on what constitutes a good pub or even the merits of a pub itself but there is no denying that there will be many fantastic stories and memories from some of the best bars in Stockport.
It seems as though the oldest pub in the Stockport area is going to be transformed into a leisure and redevelopment. There will obviously be some people upset at this announcement, claiming it is yet another change that will see the old way of Stockport life removed but equally, it is another sign that life in Stockport is evolving. At Spencer Harvey, we have witnessed Stockport be transformed in recent times and anything which provides more residential options for people should be viewed with optimism.
There is also the fact that The White Lion pub, which dates back to the 15th century has been lying empty for a number of years. Yes, the building received a Grade II listed status back in 1993 but it has only been since the local council acquired the venue in 2015 that there has been optimism around the use of the land and venue. The council believed it was important to safeguard the future of the historical building and this now looks to have been a wise move.
The scheme looks set to cost £2.4m and looks like bringing seven one bedroom apartments, three two bedroom apartments and a single two bed duplex apartment.
Once completed the £2.4m scheme, which has a ground floor footprint of around 600 square metres and approximately 800 square metres of upper floor space, is set to feature seven one-bed, three two-bed and one two-bed duplex apartments. This may not seem like a lot of homes but with 11 new apartment options coming in this one building, it is a step in the right direction. The introduction of leisure options should also provide a further boost to the local community, which should mean that there is plenty of benefit to the Stockport community in general.
At Spencer Harvey, we know that losing touch with history is a sore point for some people but in general, Stockport is on the up and progress is being made that will last a long time.
