When it comes to adding new property to the mix in Stockport, you would think that there would be positivity to any project that promised to deliver more than 200 apartments to the local area. However, as we know, there are many different factors involved and as the on-going debate about whether to build on greenbelt sites rages on, we know that the property market in Stockport is a hot topic for many people. However, we believe that when old and dilapidated buildings are being given a new lease of life, there is a lot to be pleased about.
The sign-off for planning permission for the Meadow Mill project has been granted, with the final approval being granted at the Town Planning Committee which took place on the 27th of April. This means that work on the £20m residential conversion of the mill that lies on the perimeter of Stockport Town Centre looks set to get underway shortly.
A range of opportunities available at Meadow Mill in Stockport
William George Homes is the company that will renovate the 175,000 sq ft mill, which holds a Grade II listed status. In total, there will be 213 apartments in the project, ranging from studio apartments to three bedroom options. This is something that is pleasing to hear because there is a need for affordable housing and this range of housing options should hopefully open up the project to more people. It is believed that the flats will include a mix of property for sale and rent; which again is good.
While it is important to offer affordable housing, it has to be remembered that there will be people who cannot justify the cost of buying property, or who even want to buy property. There has been a mind-set change in a lot of folk and property ownership is no longer seen as the vital stopping point in life that it used to be. People do though need a place to live so the availability of flats to buy and rent is something that should be commended at the Meadow Mill project.
Property is expected to be available from 2018, and this is a building with a long and illustrious past in Stockport. The textile mill was built in 1880 and in recent times it has played host a wide range of occupants. The mixture of office space, retail outlets, leisure and industrial units has meant that many people have worked and spent time in the mill but even the biggest fans of the building would agree that it had seen better days. Large areas of the structure had fallen into disrepair and over 60% of the property was lying vacant.
Stockport is a town on the rise and the Meadow Mill project is a chance to move forward while still holding on to its history and past. It is understandable that some people have misgivings about change and the development of parts of local history but in creating over 200 apartments, there is a chance for many people to find their new home in Stockport.
