HOW TO MOVE HOME EFFECTIVELY

How To Move Home Effectively

Moving home is supposed to be one of the most stressful activities a person undertakes and with so many things to remember, it can be easy to overlook certain matters. This is why the National Association of Estate Agents are happy to provide people with a checklist of tasks associated with moving home and as Spencer Harvey is a member of the NAEA, we are more than happy to provide you with tips and guidelines to move home effectively.

As soon as you have a moving date, you can start to put plans into motion. You may need to take time off from work, you may need to ask family members or friends to help out and you may want to arrange for assistance from a packing and removals company. If you are looking to hire professionals to help you move, be sure to obtain at least three quotes and then go for the option that is best for your needs.

Contact relevant organisations and authorities about your move

If you have services that are provided to your home, such as newspapers or milk, cancel or change the order and you should inform your utility suppliers of the move. Look to see if you can continue your service in your new home or whether you have to cancel and arrange for a new supplier. This is also a good time to inform the Royal Mail and request a mail redirect, this will provide you with a backup in case you forget to inform any relevant body or authority of your move. Organisations you may wish to inform about your move include your employer, banks and building societies, HMRC, credit card companies, doctors, dentists and any other professional who needs to know your address.

When it comes to packing, taking one room at a time and having an ordered process should help. This is an ideal time to discard certain items that you won’t need in your new home. Decluttering saves space and makes things easier, so see what you can discard, give away, sell or pass on as opposed to taking with you to your new home. Once items are packed, label the boxes accordingly and allocate them to a room in your new home.

Keep certain items handy for moving day

In the build-up to moving day, ensure that you have a box or bag filled with toiletries and essential items for the day. Towels, soap, toothpaste, a kettle, tea and biscuits, milk and many other items are likely to be of benefit on moving day so place these items in a container that you can easily find.     You should also keep bedding and clothes for moving day handy too.

Make sure that everyone has directions to the new home and remember to take breaks. You may feel that powering through will get the job completed quicker but sometimes taking a break to recharge your batteries works wonders.
