FUTURE HIGH STREET PLANS IN STOCKPORT

Future High Street Plans In Stockport

Stockport Council have been proactive in the development of the town centre. The latest venture from the council leaders comes as they provide information about their bid for money from the Future High Street Fund on offer from the Government. If successful, this money will go a long to transforming the heart of Stockport town centre.

The bid was for a total of £14.5 million, and it was submitted earlier in June. The project has been dubbed “StockRoom”, and it could be bolstered by a further £8 million worth of investment. If funding is granted, the former BHS and M&S stores will be changed considerably.

The aim of StockRoom is to create a learning and knowledge hub in the local town centre. Stockport has a considerable level of creativity and culture, and this is a space that aims to allow local people to their story and the story of their family.

The Future High Streets Fund will help many towns

More than £1 billion is on offer in the Future High Streets Fund. There are over 100 towns who are eligible for a share of the money, so there is a lot of competition. However, the bid placed by Stockport town council is a strong one, although no doubt, many other towns will feel the same about their venture.

The council has been busy of late, also launching their One Stockport campaign. Everyone is looking for information, guidance and support right now. This campaign aims to support the local economy, bring the community together and promote safety, health and well-being at all times.

Stockport is gearing up for business

The first part of the One Stockport campaign will support businesses to open safely. This is a time when people need to feel confident about engaging and interacting again, and a lot of work will be carried out in this field over the next few weeks.

Cllr Elise Wilson, is the Leader of Stockport Council, and she said; “We are currently in unprecedented and difficult times but as a council we are absolutely focused on building back better – this is our priority and forms the basis of our One Stockport campaign. We already have ambitious plans in place for Stockport like the transport hub, the arrival of Metrolink and a revitalised town centre, but this additional funding will really strengthen all our town centre has to offer.”

Cllr David Meller is a Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economy at Stockport Council, and he said; “This exciting development will bring more people in to the town centre and more importantly, will be somewhere that local people can enjoy for years to come. It will also act as a catalyst to attract even more investment into the town and attract major businesses like we have done with BASF relocating to Stockport Exchange. We have put in a really strong bid and I look forward to hearing if we have been successful later on this year.”

With convenient transport links to the centre of Manchester, and significant developments taking place, Stockport is the ideal place to buy, live or invest.
