DEMOLITION WORK BEGINS IN CHEADLE HULME

Demolition Work Begins In Cheadle Hulme

There is a lot of development work taking place in greater Manchester and around the Stockport area, but there has been particular interest in the demolishment work that has begun in Cheadle Hulme. The work centres on the old school buildings used by the Seashell Trust in Stanley Road, and this signifies work has begun on a £45m project. The organisation is looking to bring a new campus to the area and they also have ambitions to see property developments take place on the surrounding land.

The buildings have been part of the local landscape since the 1950s and while it will be sad to see them go, there is a need to move forward. The buildings have been deemed unfit for purpose, and it is good to see the organisation taking a bold step forward to ensure that they continue to provide a good service to their students and loved ones.

New homes are needed in the local area

Of course, when it comes to the local community, there is likely to be a greater level of interest in any property development plans. There is an application in place and if it is accepted, up to 325 homes could be added to the land which is currently owned by the Seashell Trust. The land lies between the A34 at Heald Green and Wilmslow Road. At this point in time, the land is recognised as greenbelt land but in recent weeks, there has been acknowledgment that Greater Manchester may need to review its stance on building on greenbelt areas.

Areas like Stockport and surrounding areas need to grow and develop, and in this part of the region, greenbelt land is the only suitable land. In other parts of the city, industrial and brown field land is available but when these options are not available to a local council, there is a need to make a tough decision.

The plan for the Trust is to release some of the land that they currently own to a property developer and it is believed that this will provide £30m in funding. This is two thirds of the total required to complete the campus, so it is easy to see why the Seashell Trust are taking this approach. However, given the need for property in this part of Greater Manchester, it is a move that is likely to be welcomed by many people.

As a local estate agent, we have a great level of interest in this, and any other property development, in the Stockport, Cheadle Hulme or Greater Manchester area. It remains to be seen if the full plans come to light but it is definitely something which could be of benefit to the whole community.
