While there has been a considerable amount of work and change in the heart of Stockport, there is also a lot going on around the outskirts of the area. A development which is set to bring 224 new properties to just outside of Stockport has been approved by Cheshire East Council. The properties are set to be added in Handforth, and while being close to Stockport, the properties will offer accommodation for people commuting to and from Wilmslow and South Manchester.
Green belt property plans are controversial in and around Stockport
However, and not for the first time, there is an element of controversy over property plans in and around Stockport. The development on Meriton Road, led by Anwyl Homes, is set to take place on former greenbelt landlord. In 2018, Cheshire East Council earmarked this land for housing, in a move that was far from being universally liked or approved. After Anwyl Homes increased the number of properties scheduled to be added on site, including more affordable housing, the plans have been approved.
There is a need for affordable housing, and there will be many people happy to see the plans come to fruition. Ideally, there would be more affordable housing options in the development, and across the local area, but any step forward is a positive step. The new homes are set to be added on land lying between Clay Lane and Sagar Road.
A wide range of properties will be added
The plans will see a mix of property sizes being added to the area. There will be 36 two-bedroom properties, 70 three-bedroom properties, 74 four-bedroom properties and 5 five-bedroom homes. There will also be 39 apartments, all one-bedroom properties. One existing house is set to be demolished to create road access to the development site, and there is hope that the finished development will include footpaths, cycleways and a play area for youngsters.
While the previous plans intended to deliver 250 properties to the area, planning officers felt not enough housing was on offer for single people, the elderly and first-time buyers. At this stage, it looks as though more than 30% of the new houses will be available as affordable housing, made up of a mixture of buy or rental options.
The amended plans are likely to be approved by councillors on Wednesday the 18th of December.
